Privacy Policy
Last updated: 7 October 2026
This policy explains how THE ASTRO NOVA PRIVATE LIMITED (“we”, “us”) handles personal data when you use The Astro Nova, our mobile app for Android and iPhone (“the app”). We decide why and how that data is processed, so under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (“DPDP Act”) we are its Data Fiduciary. This policy covers the app only. Websites, including theastronova.com, are covered by their own policies.
1. In short
- We collect what we need to draw your birth chart, give you readings and AI answers, and run your account.
- Your messages and chart details go to an AI provider only after you agree in the app, and only when you use an AI feature. Anthropic, which writes the AI answers, does not use them to train its models.
- Usage analytics are off unless you switch them on.
- We do not sell your personal data and the app shows no advertising.
- In the app you can export your data, correct it, switch analytics on or off, report an AI answer and delete your account.
- The app is for adults: you must be 18 or older.
2. Data we collect
- Account: your name, email address, sign-in method and user ID, and a profile picture link if your sign-in provider has one. If you use Sign in with Google or Sign in with Apple, that provider shares these with us.
- Birth details: date of birth, time of birth (or that you do not know it), and place of birth with its coordinates and time zone. From these we compute your chart (for example your sun, moon and rising signs and nakshatra).
- Preferences: language, chart style, chosen astrologer persona and notification settings.
- Your conversations: the messages you send to the AI astrologer and its replies, so you can return to a conversation.
- Voice: not in this version of the app. It records nothing and does not ask for your microphone.
- Your activity in the app: saved charts, daily readings, tarot pulls, bookmarks, streaks and achievements.
- Compatibility: in this version the match is worked out on your phone. The other person’s name and birth details you type stay on your phone and are not sent to us or to any AI provider. Please enter them only with that person’s permission.
- Usage analytics, only if you switch on “Share usage analytics” (it is off unless you switch it on): the screens you open and actions you take, linked to your account ID.
- Reports of AI answers: when you report an AI answer, the answer’s reference, the feature it came from, the reason you choose, the note you add (if any) and the time. See Reports of AI answers.
- Crash reports: technical details of errors. Before the app sends a report it removes email addresses, phone numbers, sign-in tokens and fields holding birth details; error reports from our server include your account ID.
- Device and network: the IP address you connect from, your push token if you allow notifications, and your device model, operating system and app version in crash reports and update checks.
- Messages to us: what you write when you email us.
3. Data we do not collect
The app does not collect your device location, contacts, photos, files, calendar, health or fitness data, or browsing history. It does not use advertising identifiers. We do not look up where you are from your IP address or attach it to your profile; we use it to limit request rates and to block abuse, including on the birth-place search before you sign in.
4. Why we use it, and on what basis
- To provide the app: compute your chart, panchang and daily readings, and answer your questions with AI.
- To create and secure your account and sign you in.
- To keep the service safe: rate limits, abuse prevention, safety checks on AI replies (which show crisis helplines when needed), and reviewing the AI answers you report.
- To fix problems and improve the app: crash reports, and usage analytics while you allow them.
- To send notifications you switched on.
- To answer your requests and grievances, and to comply with the law.
We process your personal data on the basis of your consent under section 6 of the DPDP Act, which you give when you create an account; separately, on the “AI Features and Your Data” screen before the app first sends anything to an AI provider; and, for usage analytics, only if you switch them on. We also rely on the legitimate uses section 7 allows, such as complying with a law or a lawful order. We use the data only for the purposes above. You can withdraw your consent at any time (see Your rights).
5. AI features
AI chat, weekly and monthly forecasts and tarot readings use AI from Anthropic, whose Claude model writes the answer. Compatibility in this version is worked out on your phone and sends nothing to Anthropic. Before the app first sends anything for these, it shows “AI Features and Your Data”, which names Anthropic and what it receives. If you tap “Not Now”, nothing is sent, and charts, panchang and the rest of the app work as before. If you agree, we send Anthropic your name, your question or message, recent conversation, and the chart details the answer needs (birth date, time, place and planetary positions). Anthropic does not use this data to train its models. Voice is not available in this version of the app, so nothing is sent to OpenAI or ElevenLabs. If voice features launch, the app will ask for your consent again, naming them, before anything is sent to them. AI replies can be wrong: see our Terms of Use. You can report any AI answer: see Reports of AI answers.
6. Reports of AI answers
Under any AI reply you can tap ⋯ and then “Report this reply” (under an AI reading, “Report this reading”), choose a reason and, if you like, add a note. If the reason is self-harm or suicide, the app shows crisis helplines first; the report still goes through. We store the report with your account: the answer’s reference, the feature it came from, the reason, your note and the time. Your note is not sent to any other company: the alert our team receives carries only the feature, the reason and the report’s reference, not your note or your account ID. Reports go to our team at info@theastronova.com. We look at reports about self-harm or suicide the same day, acknowledge every report within 24 hours and resolve it within 15 days, following rule 3(2) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. Reports are kept with your account and erased with it.
7. Who processes your data for us
We share personal data only with service providers that process it on our behalf, and send each one only what its task needs:
| Provider | What it does for us | Data it receives | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clerk | Sign-in and account identity. | Name, email address, user ID, sign-in method, profile picture link (if your sign-in provider has one), and the IP address and device details of your sign-in sessions. | United States |
| Google (Sign in with Google) | Confirms your identity, only if you choose Sign in with Google. | Google shares your name, email address and profile picture link with us through Clerk. | United States and other countries |
| Apple (Sign in with Apple) | Confirms your identity, only if you choose Sign in with Apple on an iPhone. | Apple shares your name and email address (or a private relay address) with us through Clerk. When you delete an account that uses Sign in with Apple, the app asks Apple for a one-time code and our server sends it to Apple so that Apple ends this app’s access to your Apple Account. | United States and other countries |
| Anthropic | AI model (Claude) that writes AI chat replies, forecasts, tarot readings and daily horoscopes. | Your name, your question or message, recent conversation, and the chart details the answer needs (birth date, time, place and planetary positions). | United States |
| OpenAI | Not used in this version of the app. When voice features launch, and only after you agree to it in the app: speech-to-text (Whisper) for voice questions. | Nothing in this version. When voice launches: the audio recording of your voice question, only when you use voice. | United States |
| ElevenLabs | Not used in this version of the app. When voice features launch, and only after you agree to it in the app: text-to-speech for spoken astrologer replies. | Nothing in this version. When voice launches: the text of the reply to be spoken, which can include your name and chart interpretation. | United States and other countries |
| Neon | Database hosting for your account, birth details, readings and conversations. | Everything stored in your account. | Outside India (cloud region chosen by us) |
| Cloudflare | Hosts our API and these pages; protects them from abuse. | Your IP address and request details (for example time, path and app version) for every request. | Global network, including outside India |
| Upstash | Short-lived rate-limit counters (Redis). | Your account ID or IP address, inside a counter. | Outside India (cloud region chosen by us) |
| Sentry | Crash and error reports. | Technical details of the error, device model, operating system and app version, and the IP address the report is sent from. Before the app sends a report it removes email addresses, phone numbers, sign-in tokens and fields holding birth details; error reports from our server include your account ID and the API address that failed, without its query. When you report an AI answer, our server sends an alert to our team through Sentry with the feature, the reason and the report’s reference, without your note or account ID. | United States |
| PostHog | Usage analytics, only after you switch on “Share usage analytics” (it is off unless you do), and only while it stays on. | Screens you open and actions you take in the app, linked to your account ID; device and app version. | United States |
| Expo | Delivers push notifications you allowed, and app updates. | Your push token and the notification text; for update checks, your app version, platform and an installation ID. | United States |
| Apple Push Notification service and Google Firebase Cloud Messaging | Carry notifications to your phone, only if you allow notifications. | Your device push token and the notification text. | United States and other countries |
| Google Places | Suggests birth places as you type. | The place name you type (city level); no account details. | United States and other countries |
| OpenStreetMap Foundation (Nominatim) | Backup birth-place search when Google Places is unavailable. | The place name you type (city level); no account details. | United Kingdom and other countries |
| Apple App Store and Google Play | Distribute the app and show the store’s own rating prompt. | What the stores collect under their own terms when you download, update or rate the app. | United States and other countries |
| RevenueCat | Checks whether your account has an App Store or Google Play subscription. This version sells nothing. | Each time the app starts: an ID the app creates, or your account ID once you are signed in, with basic device and app details (such as platform, app version and IP address). When you delete your account, our server sends your account ID and sign-in ID to check that no store subscription is still active. Purchase records only once paid features exist. | United States |
| Run AI Intelligence Private Limited | A related company (not the operator of the app) that provides technology services for the app on behalf of The Astro Nova and only on our instructions. For now, some of our accounts with the providers in this table are held in its name; they are moving to us. | The personal data in the systems and provider accounts it runs for us, used only to provide the app and only on our instructions. | India |
Run AI Intelligence Private Limited, listed above, is a company related to us. It is not the operator of the app: we are. It provides technology services for the app on behalf of The Astro Nova and only on our instructions, and for now some of our accounts with the other providers in the table are held in its name while they move to us. It may use personal data only to provide the app.
We do not sell personal data. We disclose it to others only when the law requires it, for example under a lawful order of a court or government authority.
8. Data processed outside India
Most of these providers store or process data outside India, including in the United States. The DPDP Act (section 16) allows this except to countries the Government of India restricts by notification; we will follow any such restriction. We choose providers that protect data under contract.
9. How long we keep data
- While your account is open: your account, birth details, conversations, activity and your reports of AI answers.
- After you delete your account: it is deactivated and you are signed out at once. A daily job at 02:00 UTC erases your data from our database and deletes your sign-in identity at Clerk, normally on its first run after 30 days have passed. The 30 days are not a cancellation period you can use from the app: see Delete your account.
- Voice recordings: this version records nothing. When voice launches, recordings will not be stored by us (OpenAI may keep audio for a limited time to monitor abuse under its own terms).
- Rate-limit counters: most expire within minutes. The daily voice-use counter, used only once voice launches, is kept for 36 hours.
- Analytics and crash reports already sent to PostHog and Sentry, and Cloudflare request logs, expire on those providers’ own schedules; deleting your account does not remove them earlier.
- Emails and grievance records: as long as needed to resolve your request and as the law requires.
- On your phone: the app keeps a local copy of some data (for example cached readings) so it works offline. Signing out or deleting your account clears the cached account data; uninstalling the app removes everything the app stored.
10. Your rights
Under the DPDP Act you can:
- Get a summary and a copy of your personal data and how it is processed (section 11). In the app: Profile → Account → Export My Data gives you a copy as a file.
- Correct, complete or update it (section 12): Profile → Account → Edit Profile, or email us.
- Erase it (section 12): delete your account in the app, or ask us by email to erase all or part of your data.
- Withdraw your consent at any time, as easily as you gave it (section 6(4)). Analytics: switch off “Share usage analytics” under Profile → Preferences (it is off unless you switched it on). AI: stop using the AI features (nothing is sent to an AI provider unless you use one), and email us to have your stored conversations erased. Notifications: switch them off in your phone’s settings. Everything: delete your account. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing done before, and features that need the data stop working.
- Nominate another person to exercise these rights if you die or become unable to (section 14). Email us to do this.
- Have your grievances redressed (section 13) as set out below, and then complain to the Data Protection Board of India if you are not satisfied.
To use any right, email info@theastronova.com from the email address on your account so we can confirm it is you. The law also asks users not to impersonate others, not to suppress material information and not to file false or frivolous complaints (section 15).
11. Grievances
Write to our Grievance Officer, named below, with your account email and the details of your complaint. We acknowledge every grievance within 24 hours and resolve it within 15 days of receiving it, following rule 3(2) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
12. Adults only
The app is for people aged 18 and over and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly process the personal data of anyone under 18. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we delete it. If you think a child is using the app, email us.
13. Security
Data travels between the app and our servers over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and our hosting providers encrypt it at rest. On your phone, your sign-in token is kept in the phone’s secure storage (the Keychain on iPhone, Keystore-protected storage on Android), and your profile, settings and preferences in storage the app encrypts where the phone supports it. Other data the app keeps on your phone for offline use (cached readings, panchang and chart details, chat history, changes waiting to sync, and spoken replies cached for playback) is not separately encrypted by the app, and relies on your phone’s own protection, such as its screen lock and built-in device encryption. Access to personal data is limited to the people and services that need it. No system is perfectly secure; if a personal data breach happens, we will inform you and the Data Protection Board of India as the DPDP Act requires.
14. Changes to this policy
When our practices change we update this page and its “Last updated” date. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
